Book Playlists // Map of Fates

Tuesday, 15 March 2016
I totally thought these were in chronological order and then I remembered that one song fits two scenes really and I don't know anymore. Anyway, I loved Map of Fates in case you didn't know, and as always, BEWARE OF MAJOR SPOILERS FOR MAP OF FATES WITHIN THE LYRICS AND EXPLANATIONS!!!

Lyric Breakdown:

Talk Me Down - Troye Sivan

"I wanna sleep next to you
But that's all I wanna do right now
And I wanna come home to you
But home is just a room full of my safest sounds
Cause you know that I can't trust myself with my 3AM shadow
I'd rather fuel a fantasy than deal with this alone"

Map of Fates opens up with us finding out that Jack and Avery have been sharing an apartment. When Avery can't sleep, she crawls into bed with Jack--her kind-of boyfriend. I don't know, but something about Talk Me Down screams Jack and Avery.

Everybody's Watching Me (Uh Oh) - The Neighbourhood

"I told you I would tell you everything you want to know
You want me to tell you now
You pressure me to shout it
Need to hear about it
Think that I would count you out"

This really reminds me of Avery and Jack approaching the Saxons and telling them some of watch happened and what they discovered, but not all of it.

"Uh oh, where can I go?
Everybody's watching me"

Basically, everyone watches Avery 24/7 because she's the most important member of the circle (since she has purple eyes). However, they often have to sneak away to try to find the second bracelet.

Castle - Halsey

"Sick of all these people talking, sick of all this noise
Tired of all these cameras flashing, sick of being poised
Now my neck is open wide, begging for a fist around it
Already choking on my pride, so there's no use crying about it

I'm headed straight for the castle
They wanna make me their queen
And there's an old man sitting on the throne that's saying that I probably shouldn't be so mean
I'm headed straight for the castle
They've got the kingdom locked up
And there's an old man sitting on the throne that's saying I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut"

As the girl with the purple eyes, Avery is sort of seen as the closest thing to a leader the circle has. Also, her father locks her up and tries to marry her off to whomever he wants. (Because obviously he's not a feminist.)

Drive - Halsey

"Would it really kill you if we kissed?"

This applies to both Jack and Avery, and Stellan and Avery. Honestly, I wouldn't be mad if she ended up with either one. They're both just so perfect!!!!! (And there's always fanfiction.)

Dollhouse - Melanie Martinez

"Places, places, get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces.
Everyone thinks that we're perfect
Please don't let them look through the curtains.

Picture, picture, smile for the picture
Pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?"

Surprise! Saxons = Order (no, I could have never called that in a million years because that was an EPIC PLOT TWIST). This perfect family actually consists of a bunch of power-hungry people who want to talk over the world.

Milk and Cookies - Melanie Martinez

"3, 4, baby, won't you lock the door?
5, 6, I'm done with this"

This sort of reminds me of when they kidnapped Avery and then her escaping with the help of her friends but mainly Stellan.

"Do you like my cookies? They're made just for you
A little bit of sugar, but lots of poison, too

Ashes, ashes, time to go down
Ooh, honey do you want me now?
Can't take it anymore, need to put you to bed
Sing you a lullaby where you die at the end"

Cut to the end of the novel when AVERY'S MOM DIES WTF I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING WHAT EVEN I COULDN'T EVEN COMPREHEND WHAT WAS GOING ON MAJOR PLOT TWIST WAS MAJOR.

Female Robbery - The Neighbourhood (I recommend listening to the EP version due to the last line, but that's the only difference.)

"I bet they planned it all out,
Like the shows
Went everywhere I go.
Walked in the store right behind me,
Stood in line right beside me and followed me to my home.
I'm sure they figured it out early on
That I would never run.
That they could shoot but that's no fun,
'Cause then they're killing the stolen son."

Lydia and Cole followed Avery and the gang everywhere, and this lyric kind of reflects how in depth that went. Again, really great plot twist.

I Know You - Skylar Grey

"I believe, I believe you could love me
But you're lost on the road to misery
And what I gave to you
I could never get back
Don't complicate it,
Don't drive yourself insane
Yeah,
Say what you will but I know that you want to stay"

This reminds me of that bathroom scene on a train on the way to Cannes and those two people in the bathroom and their relationship as a whole. Okay, I'm done.

Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High? - Arctic Monkeys

"Somewhere darker
Talking the same shite
I need a partner
Well, are you out tonight?
It's harder and harder to get you to listen
More I get through the gears
Incapable of making alright decisions
And having bad ideas"

And then Avery and Stellan went to a bar and things happened and they drank a bit.

Sex (EP Version) - The 1975 (Quite frankly, I just prefer the EP version. The album version is okay, but the EP version is better.)

"And this is how it starts
Take your shoes off in the back of my van
Yeah my shirt looks so good,
When it's just hanging off your back
And she said, "Use your hands and my spare time—
We've got one thing in common, it's this tongue of mine."
She said
She's got a boyfriend anyway"

So when Stellan and Avery got back, they started to make out...

"Now we're on the bed in my room
And I'm about to fill his shoes
But you say no
You say no
Does he take care of you

Or could I easily fill his shoes?
But you say no
You say no"

...And then Stellan stopped them from going all the way (at which point I was like "nnnnooooooooooooo!!!!!!")...

"You've all got boyfriends anyway"

...And then I was kind of mad at Stellan for stopping it. Like, WHY??? YOU TWO OBVIOUSLY HAVE FEELINGS FOR EACH OTHER??? HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD OF POLYGAMY???!!!

Here's the actual playlist on Spotify if you'd like to listen to it.

So that's my Map of Fates playlist and explanation. I hope you liked it!

  1. I absolutely LOVE Talk Me Down. Hands down favorite Troye song. It's so heartbreaking! I haven't read Map Of Fates, yet, but I loved the first book!
